You are not alone, although that's how it can feel. In fact, millions of people in the world now suffer with depression.
It can creep up on you slowly or appear as if out of nowhere. That heavy, miserable, desperate, what's the point feeling. Everything is such an effort: you forget what it is like to laugh and can't believe that you ever did; even small decisions are beyond you; your mind is racing, your heart is pounding and yet you can hardly put one foot in front of the other.
This isn't just feeling a bit off today and tomorrow you wake up and you're fine again. No, this is a bigger, sadder and much lonelier place to be.
It can be started by an upsetting event in your life, or it can appear over time. Whatever the cause things can get better.
If you have had an accident, been assaulted or lived through a period of severe stress such as domestic violence or bullying, then it can have an ongoing damaging effect on your life, well after the danger has passed. Though I generally work with helping people move forward in their lives by looking at changes they can make now I have found that for some we need to do some work to help them leave distressing situations in the past. This is done by using a technique that allows the emotions to be 'unhooked' from the memories. The person will still remember what happened to them, but the memories will be in the past instead of feeling like it happened only yesterday.
During this technique, known as the 'Rewind', you don’t need to say what has happened to you. This can be really helpful if it’s too upsetting or embarrassing to talk about it. Other people want to give an outline of what happened and that's okay too.
I will then help you review those experiences in your mind, while you're very relaxed. This allows the brain to realise that the danger is in the past and it then stores the memories differently. This technique alone can be life-changing for some people. For others it is the start to helping them look forward to how they want in their life to be now they're no longer being held back by the past events.
Using this technique I have successfully helped people move on from such things, such as workplace bullying, child abuse, sexual abuse, medical emergencies and accidents.
This same technique can be used in a slightly different way to help with phobias.
I am registered with PTSD Resolution. PTSD Resolution is a charity (no. 1133118) that helps Veterans, Reservists and Families who are struggling to reintegrate into a normal work & family life because of trauma suffered during service in the armed forces.
As with other trauma this PTSD Resolution treatment can be carried out without the therapist, or anyone else, ever knowing about the events that caused the trauma. This ensures confidentiality, protects the patient from further distress and often protects the therapist from hearing about large numbers of often extremely disturbing incidents. These can be important safeguards for the client and therapist.
Please contact the charity and they can put you in touch with a suitable therapist in your area and assist you with therapy fees. The charity only refers to Human Givens Therapists because they have found they have found their therapy methods are universally the most effective.
