*Depression

It can creep up on you slowly or appear as if out of nowhere. That heavy, miserable, desperate, what's the point feeling. Everything is such an effort, you forget what it is like to laugh and can't believe that you ever did. Even small decisions are beyond you. Your mind can race, your heart can pound and yet you can hardly put one foot in front of the other. Many people successfully mask their low mood and can go to work and appear to function but what is going on behind that closed door that is their mind is another matter.

You are not alone, although that's how it can feel. In fact, 350 million people in the world now suffer with depression (World Health Organisation 2012) and this number is rising every day.

We are all different and yet low mood can affect anyone. The descriptions above are the realities of some of the ways people feel when they have aspects of depression. This isn't just feeling a bit off today and tomorrow you wake up and you're fine again no this is a bigger, sadder and much lonelier place to be. It can be started by an event in your life which upsets you or it can appear over time. Whatever the cause things can get better.

*Trauma

If you have had an accident or been assaulted or lived through a period of severe stress such as domestic violence or bullying, then it can have an ongoing damaging effect on your life, well after the danger has passed. Though I generally work with helping people move forward in their lives by looking at changes they can make now I have found that for some we need to do some work to help them leave distressing situations in the past. This is done by using a technique that allows the emotions to be 'unhooked' from the memories. The person will still remember what happened to them, but the memories will be in the past instead of feeling like it happened only yesterday.

During this technique, known as the 'Rewind', Amanda doesn't need to know what has happened to you. For some people it is too shocking or embarrassing to have to talk about it and that's fine. Other people want to give an outline of what happened to them and that's okay too. Amanda will then help you review those experiences in your mind, while you're very relaxed. This allows the brain to realise that the danger is in the past which then allows it to store the memories differently. This technique alone can be life changing for some people. For others it is the start to helping them look forward to what they want in their life now they're no longer being held back by the trauma.

Amanda has successfully helped people move on from such things as work place bullying, child abuse, sexual abuse and accidents using this technique.

This same technique can be used in a slightly different way to help with phobias.
